Discover K’gari (Fraser Island)

Your Essential Guide to K'gari's Wonders and Important Visitor Information

Welcome to K'gari (Fraser Island): Paradise Found

K'gari, pronounced "Gurri," means "paradise" in the language of the Butchulla people, the Traditional Owners of this land. As the world's largest sand island and a UNESCO World Heritage site, K'gari is a truly unique destination, boasting a diverse ecosystem where ancient rainforests grow directly from sand, and over 40 freshwater lakes sparkle amidst towering dunes. Formerly known as Fraser Island, its official name was restored to K'gari in recognition and respect for its Indigenous heritage.

What Makes K'gari Unique?

World's Largest Sand Island: Stretching 123km long, K'gari is an extraordinary geological marvel, formed entirely from sand accumulated over millions of years.

  • Rainforests on Sand: It's the only place on Earth where subtropical rainforests thrive purely on sand, fed by natural groundwater.

  • Pristine Freshwater Lakes: Discover over 40 crystal-clear freshwater lakes, including the iconic Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora) with its pure silica sand and tea tree-infused waters, and Lake Wabby, a green-hued oasis nestled beside a moving sandblow.

  • Pure Dingo Population: K'gari is home to some of Australia's purest wild dingoes. It's crucial to observe strict safety guidelines to protect both visitors and these incredible animals.

  • 75 Mile Beach: A Sand Highway: This iconic stretch of coastline doubles as a registered national highway and aircraft landing strip, offering a thrilling 4WD driving experience (speed limit 80km/h).

  • Ancient Culture: K'gari has been inhabited by the Butchulla people for at least 5,000 years, and their deep connection to the island's culture and traditions is palpable.

Important Things to Know Before You Visit

  • 4WD is Essential: K'gari has no sealed roads. A high-clearance, low-range 4WD vehicle is mandatory for exploring the island. Vehicle access permits are required and must be purchased in advance.

  • Permits: You will need a Vehicle Access Permit for your 4WD and a Camping Permit if you plan to camp. These must be obtained online through the Queensland National Parks website before your arrival.

  • Ferry Bookings: Book your ferry transfer from Hervey Bay (River Heads) or Rainbow Beach (Inskip Point) well in advance, especially during peak seasons.

  • Dingo Safety:

    • NEVER feed dingoes. It's illegal and dangerous.

    • Always stay within arm's reach of children, even small teenagers.

    • Walk in groups and carry a stick.

    • Do not run or jog.

    • Secure all food, rubbish, fish, and bait in dingo-safe containers or vehicles.

    • Report any negative dingo interactions to park rangers.

  • Swimming Safety:

    • Swimming in the ocean off K'gari is NOT recommended due to strong currents, sharks, and marine stingers (especially in summer).

    • Stick to designated safe swimming areas in freshwater lakes and creeks like Lake McKenzie, Lake Wabby, and Eli Creek.

  • Water and Supplies: Bring ample fresh drinking water. Limited supplies (fuel, ice, basic groceries) are available at townships like Eurong, Kingfisher Bay Resort, Orchid Beach, Happy Valley, and Cathedrals on Fraser, but it's best to be self-sufficient.

  • Tides and Driving Conditions: Plan your beach driving around low tide. Conditions can change rapidly, and some sections may be impassable at high tide. Be aware of soft sand and washouts.

  • Fires: Open fires are generally prohibited on K'gari, except in communal fire rings at designated QPWS camping areas (Dundubara and Waddy Point top) where you must bring your own clean, milled timber. Always check current fire bans.

  • Minimal Impact: Help preserve K'gari's pristine environment by taking all your rubbish with you or disposing of it in designated waste transfer stations. Do not disturb wildlife or vegetation.

Plan your unforgettable K'gari adventure and discover why it's truly paradise!
