Visiting K’gari
-
Yes. K’gari is the world’s largest sand island and all travel on the island requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle.
To reach Orchid Beach and Woods on K’gari you will need a suitable 4WD vehicle and basic sand driving knowledge.
If you are hiring a vehicle, make sure the company permits travel to Orchid Beach, as some restrict access to the northern end of the island.
Adventure 4WD Hire in Rainbow Beach is one option that allows travel to Orchid Beach and provides driver briefings.
-
There are two barge options.
From Rainbow Beach (Inskip Point): This is the most common route and provides direct access to the eastern beach.
From Hervey Bay (Kingfisher Bay Resort): Vehicles arrive on the western side of the island and then drive across to the eastern beach.
Both routes eventually lead to the eastern beach highway, which you follow north to Orchid Beach.
-
Travel time is approximately two hours from either:
Rainbow Beach via the Inskip Point barge
Kingfisher Bay Resort
Driving conditions change depending on tides and beach conditions, so travel times can vary slightly.
For the easiest driving conditions, we strongly recommend travelling 2–3 hours before or after low tide.
-
Yes. All vehicles on K’gari require a Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service vehicle access permit.
These can be purchased online before arriving on the island.
Getting to Woods on K’gari
-
Woods on K’gari is located at Orchid Beach, on the northern end of the island at 59 Marloo Avenue.
Our cabins sit within native woodland inside the Orchid Beach dingo fence, just a short drive from the village centre. From the beach entrance at Orchid Beach it takes approximately 5 minutes to reach the property.
Once you arrive at Orchid Beach, we recommend stopping at the Orchid Beach shop before heading to the property.
Phone navigation apps can sometimes direct drivers onto old logging tracks or fire access tracks, which may be gated or difficult to drive.
Following our directions from the shop is the easiest and most reliable route.
Directions from Orchid Beach Shop
From the Orchid Beach shop, head north and turn left onto Wathumba Road.
Follow Wathumba Road and turn left into Marloo Avenue.
Continue approximately 1.3 km to the end of the road.
Look for Private Property / No Through Road signs.
Continue forward until you see the Sea Mine sign, then turn right into Woods on K’gari.
Parking is available onsite for cars and boats.
We recommend not relying solely on map apps when travelling on K’gari.
Google Maps sometimes suggests routes along old logging tracks or fire breaks that are no longer accessible.
Because mobile reception can drop out in many areas of the island, we strongly recommend bringing a paper map of K’gari as a backup.
Telstra provides the only reliable reception across the island.
-
Yes. Orchid Beach has boarded roads through the village area, which are easy to navigate with a 4WD.
Normal tide planning is only required when travelling on the main eastern beach highway.
-
Check-in times are often flexible due to tide schedules and travel conditions.
Because beach travel is easiest around low tide, we try to accommodate arrival times where possible.
If you have a preferred arrival time, feel free to let us know.
Check-out is 10am.
