How Far Is It From Woods on K'gari? Travel Times to K'gari's Most Popular Attractions
One of the questions we're asked by guests planning their K'gari adventure is:
"How far is it to Champagne Pools?" Or Indian Head. Or Eli Creek. Or Lake McKenzie.
The answer depends on tides, beach conditions and track conditions, but we've put together this guide to help you plan your stay at Woods on K'gari and make the most of your time on the world's largest sand island.
Located at Orchid Beach on K'gari's northeastern coastline, Woods on K'gari is ideally positioned for exploring many of the island's most famous attractions while offering a peaceful bushland retreat to return to at the end of the day.
A Quick Note About Travel on K'gari
Travel times on K'gari are very different to driving on the mainland.
The times in this guide are approximate and will vary depending on:
Tide times
Beach conditions
Traffic
Weather
Track conditions
We're on island time, so always allow extra time and enjoy the journey.
When driving along the beach, always be on the lookout for:
Creek washouts
Children playing around parked vehicles
Aircraft taking off and landing on the beach
Other 4WD traffic
One of our biggest tips for guests is to check the tides before booking your trip. The difference between a weekend with favourable tides and a weekend with challenging tides can dramatically affect how easily you can explore the island.
Why Orchid Beach Is One of the Best Places to Stay on K'gari
Many first-time visitors assume staying further south is the most convenient option because it's closer to the barge.
However, many of K'gari's most iconic attractions are actually located much closer to Orchid Beach.
From Woods on K'gari:
Champagne Pools is approximately 15 minutes away
Indian Head is approximately 20 minutes away
Little Eli is approximately 30 minutes away
This means you can often beat the crowds, spend less time driving and more time enjoying the island.
Champagne Pools
15 minutes | 6km
Champagne Pools is one of K'gari's most famous attractions.
Protected rock pools allow ocean waves to spill over the rocks, creating the bubbling effect that gives the pools their name.
Local tip
Champagne Pools is best visited around low to mid tide for swimming and snorkelling.
Don't forget your thongs. The boardwalk can become extremely hot during summer.
Indian Head
20 minutes | 8km
Indian Head is the highest point on K'gari's eastern coastline and offers incredible views along the beach.
Visitors regularly spot turtles, rays, dolphins, sharks, and humpback whales during migration season
Local tip
Fishing on the northern side of Indian Head can be excellent when the northeast winds are blowing.
Little Eli (Wyuna Creek)
30 minutes | 22km
Little Eli is one of the quieter freshwater creeks on K'gari.
Less crowded than Eli Creek, it's particularly popular with families travelling with younger children.
The shallow freshwater and relaxed atmosphere make it a wonderful place to spend a few hours.
Dundaburra
35 minutes | 27km
Dundaburra is home to a ranger station and camping area, and makes a useful stop when travelling the eastern beach.
Many visitors pass through on their way to attractions further south.
Woralli Track
45 minutes | 37km
One of K'gari's fascinating inland drives.
The Woralli Track provides access to the western side of the island and showcases the remarkable variety of ecosystems found on K'gari.
Along the way, you'll experience coastal woodland, Wallum heathland, and rainforest.
The changing landscape is one of the highlights of the drive.
Cathedral Beach
40 minutes | 34km
Cathedral Beach is a handy stop for supplies and refreshments. You'll find:
Grocery supplies
Takeaway food
Bar facilities
Camping and cabin accommodation
It's often a good place to take a break during a day of exploring.
SS Maheno Shipwreck
50 minutes | 39km
One of K'gari's most recognisable landmarks.
The SS Maheno was driven ashore during a cyclone in 1935 and remains on the beach today.
It's one of the most photographed locations on the island and a must-see for first-time visitors.
Eli Creek
52 minutes | 42km
Eli Creek is the largest freshwater creek flowing onto K'gari's eastern beach.
The clear freshwater, elevated boardwalk and famous float downstream experience make it one of the island's most loved attractions.
Local tip
Arrive early if possible and plan to spend several hours here.
Many visitors set up for the day and enjoy multiple floats down the creek.

Important Things to Know Before You Visit
4WD is Essential: K'gari has no sealed roads. A high-clearance, low-range 4WD vehicle is mandatory for exploring the island. Vehicle access permits are required and must be purchased in advance.
Permits: You will need a Vehicle Access Permit for your 4WD and a Camping Permit if you plan to camp. These must be obtained online through the Queensland National Parks website before your arrival.
Ferry Bookings: Book your ferry transfer from Hervey Bay (River Heads) or Rainbow Beach (Inskip Point) well in advance, especially during peak seasons.
Dingo Safety:
NEVER feed dingoes. It's illegal and dangerous.
Always stay within arm's reach of children, even small teenagers.
Walk in groups and carry a stick.
Do not run or jog.
Secure all food, rubbish, fish, and bait in dingo-safe containers or vehicles.
Report any negative dingo interactions to park rangers.
Swimming Safety:
Swimming in the ocean off K'gari is NOT recommended due to strong currents, sharks, and marine stingers (especially in summer).
Stick to designated safe swimming areas in freshwater lakes and creeks like Lake McKenzie, Lake Wabby, and Eli Creek.
Water and Supplies: Bring ample fresh drinking water. Limited supplies (fuel, ice, basic groceries) are available at townships like Eurong, Kingfisher Bay Resort, Orchid Beach, Happy Valley, and Cathedrals on Fraser, but it's best to be self-sufficient.
Tides and Driving Conditions: Plan your beach driving around low tide. Conditions can change rapidly, and some sections may be impassable at high tide. Be aware of soft sand and washouts.
Fires: Open fires are generally prohibited on K'gari, except in communal fire rings at designated QPWS camping areas (Dundubara and Waddy Point top) where you must bring your own clean, milled timber. Always check current fire bans.
Minimal Impact: Help preserve K'gari's pristine environment by taking all your rubbish with you or disposing of it in designated waste transfer stations. Do not disturb wildlife or vegetation.
Plan your unforgettable K'gari adventure and discover why it's truly paradise!
